Our Story...
The Dirty Sock Funtime Band was started by brothers Stephen and Adam Jacobs. Stephen was creating original musicals with K-5th graders at P.S. 116 in NYC (of which Alicia Keys is an alumni). Characters like the Evil Soda Machine, The Mad Yard Junk Dog and the the planet Clazarwere born . The kids created their characters, Stephen wrote the music based on the ideas and very quickly this was the most popular after-school program in the school.
That same year, Stephen invited his brother Adam to start a summer camp doing these musicals and the arts based, conflict resolution program, Kids Creative was born! Kids Creative is still running today and doing great work for NYC kids for anyone looking to find out more or support an excellent program.
In the year 2003 Stephen wanted the kids to have souvenirs of the music from the shows and began recording the music from the shows for the kids and inviting his friends to play along on the albums.
This is where Mike Messer and Bill Phillips came in!
Mike was fresh off his world tour on Hair and sat in on the recording of "I'm Hot" and "Hot Dog Mountain." on the album The Search and Rescue of Genius Backpack. Mike's talent, personality and energy blew Stephen away and they immediately became the best of friends, which they remain to this day.
Bill was doing his PhD work in media ecology and was a rippin' guitarist that Stephen became great friends with when both were living in San Fransisco. Mike and Bill both decided to join in
and The Dirty Sock Funtime Band was born!
(Little known fact, The Dirty Sock Funtime Band was originally the band that Stephen and two of his best friend's from college called themselves while on the road traveling the USA after college. A recording of this band is sitting on a shelf somewhere).
Also joining at the beginning were Stephen's awesome guitar buddy Ty Citerman, who brought in his band Gutbucket to fill out the rest of the Dirty Socks. Within 6 months, the Dirty Socks had an article in the New York Post and caught the attention of the great people at Nick Jr. (which was called Noggin at the time). They wanted two songs originally.
These songs became Music Everywhere and Dino-soaring!
After that there was no stopping the Socks. More songs for Nick Jr. Lots of tours including going to Guam to play for the sailors in the Navy and playing the PNC Bank Arts Center
the morning after Paul Simon had played!
The Search and Rescue of Genius Backpack, Mr. Clown and the Day the Sun Got Wet, Sock-A-Delic and The Dirty Socks Come Clean are all available on the streaming services and you can watch our TV show right here on this site!
